Pitbike Maintenance: Essential Steps Before & After Every Track Day πŸ”§πŸ

To ensure your pitbike runs reliably, avoids engine damage, and keeps you safe on the track, you should perform a quick but thorough maintenance check before every training session. Pitbikes are robust – but they are pushed hard. With this checklist, you'll always be ready to go.

1️⃣ Check Oil Level & Quality

A pitbike's engine operates at high RPMs and temperatures. Oil is its most important protection.

Check before riding:

  • Check oil level
  • Oil should not be dark or smell burnt
  • Recommended: 10W-40 (semi-synthetic or fully synthetic)

After the track day: After 10–15 operating hours β†’ Perform an oil change.

2️⃣ Screw Security – Is Everything Tight?

Vibrations can loosen screws! Especially with 140cc–190cc engines.

Critical screws:

  • Footpeg assembly
  • Handlebar clamp
  • Engine mounts
  • Brake calipers
  • Sprocket & pinion

πŸ‘‰ Use medium-strength threadlocker (blue), never the strong one (red!).

3️⃣ Chain Maintenance & Tension

A chain that is too loose or too tight is dangerous:

  • Too tight = stress on gearbox & bearings
  • Too loose = risk of coming off

Correct tension: 2–3 cm slack in the middle.

After every track day:

  • Clean chain
  • Lightly lubricate

4️⃣ Check Tires & Air Pressure

Correct air pressure determines grip, handling, and risk of falling.

Recommended range (depending on tire):

  • Front: 1.1–1.4 bar
  • Rear: 1.1–1.4 bar
  • General statements about tire pressures are always difficult, as pressure varies from tire to tire.
  • Which compound (Soft, Hard?)
  • Outside temperature?
  • Appropriate adjustments needed.

πŸ‘‰ In case of rain (no slicks)

5️⃣ Check Carburetor & Air Filter

Dirt in the carburetor or air filter β†’ loss of power or poor starting behavior.

Before riding:

  • Air filter clean
  • Carburetor adjusted/clean

After riding: Clean air filter.

6️⃣ Brakes – Your Most Important Safety Factor

Especially on go-kart tracks, brakes get extremely hot.

Quick check:

  • Check brake pad thickness
  • Lubricate guides & pins
  • No fading? No shuddering?
  • Brake lever travel correct?

Brake fluid: Min. DOT 4 Racing

7️⃣ Engine & Temperature

Pitbikes run hot – especially 160cc & 190cc models.

  • Radiator hoses tight?
  • Observe temperature behavior

8️⃣ Check Sprocket, Pinion & Cush Drive

A worn pinion or warped sprocket affects power transmission.

  • Teeth pointed = replace
  • Check for play in the rear wheel
  • Sprocket securely bolted?

9️⃣ Test Ride & Function Check

Before you hit the track:

  • Roll around the yard / parking lot once
  • Test brakes
  • Check throttle response
  • Handlebars straight?
